Six of 15 colourful prints depicting some of the town's high-calibre athletes were showcased at this week's District of Squamish council meeting Tuesday (Sept. 16), launching the Best of Squamish Awareness Program (BOSAP). Cardinal Concrete owner Bob Fast was on hand as the first to sponsor the program."We do really appreciate the fact that this community spirit will honour both the athlete and the coaches, we think that's very important," said Fast. "I am very proud to be part of this deal and I really like the name - the name brings out the whole thing."Organized by the Squamish Spirit Committee, Mayor Ian Sutherland, chair of the committee, presented Fast with a framed poster as thanks for his generosity."You have done so much for Squamish and you do it all so quietly I really want to thank you, you have done an amazing job," said Sutherland.Committee volunteer Bob Brant said that these posters profile local athletes and officials who have become national and even international sports stars. Businesses who wish to purchase the posters will be supporting those athletes. Some of the athletes pictured in the prints, Owen Carney, Mae Palm and Michelle Bartleman, attended council to show their appreciation for the support and Brant recognized them in the crowd."These Individuals are working hard and have worked hard to do us proud and to do themselves proud and this is a great program to profile their efforts," said Brant. A variety of sports are recognized among the 15 posters, including skiing, biking and even log rolling. The flashy posters picture a headshot of the athlete as well as an action shot of the male or female in the midst of their sport. They were designed by Coun, Heintzman who used to be editor of 99 North Visitor Magazine. Brant said he hopes that with more sponsors the committee will be able to print more posters of other top athletes.Posters are currently on display at the Municipal Hall, the Adventure Centre, Brennan Park and the Library.
