Counterfeit bills make the rounds

Businesses, local banks and the police have seen an increase of counterfeit $100 bills circulating in the past week. Several businesses have accepted these counterfeit $100 bills. Squamish RCMP are asking businesses to be vigilant when accepting $100 bills, obtain the best description of suspect(s) and associated vehicles if possible and report promptly to the police, using "911" if you have been duped or had someone try and pass counterfeit currency. The bills most recently passed are termed to be 'flat' and printed on heavier paper than normal. If you compare the bill you are about to receive to a same denomination bill you should be able to tell the difference. In an effort to stop people from accepting counterfeit Canadian or U.S. currency, police highly recommend businesses to go online and educate yourself on counterfeit detection. For information on Canadian currency visit www.bankofcanada.ca while the site www.themoneyfactory.gov/newmoney covers American currency. Any person with information on these occurrences is asked to call the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477(TIPS). Police are reviewing video surveillance tapes from various businesses and the investigation is ongoing.
