Ball field damaged

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

One of the softball fields at Squamish's Brennan Park complex sustained an estimated $3,000 in damage last week in an instance of alleged mischief involving a young Squamish resident driving a vehicle in circles around the field, according to police.

The incident at Hendrickson Field occurred last Tuesday (Jan. 3) at around 7 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement issued on Tuesday (Jan. 10).

Police began investigating after having received a report of a vehicle performing what are often called "doughnuts" on the field, Pride said. The suspect vehicle was located outside the Brennan Park ice rink shortly after the incident. Inside the vehicle were three 18-year-old Squamish males. The driver was using his mother's car, he said.

Pride said police are considering whether to pursue charges in the matter.

It's expected to cost approximately $3,000 to repair the damage, Mayor Rob Kirkham said on Wednesday (Jan. 11). "Staff did some immediate repairs to try and prevent the damage from getting worse, but the rest of the job will have to wait until the spring," he said.

"It's really, really disappointing. I'm just totally disturbed that anyone would think that this was a reasonable thing to do."

'Mattracks' stolen

Last Thursday (Jan. 5) at around 8:30 a.m., Squamish RCMP received a report about the theft of "mattracks" valued at approximately $40,000 from a vehicle owned by Powder Mountain Heli Ski.

Sometime between Wednesday (Jan. 4) at 7 a.m. and Thursday at 7:30 a.m., someone stole the tracks from the vehicle that was parked alongside Highway 99 at the intersection with Chance Creek Forest Service Road, just north of Cheakamus Canyon, Pride said. The mattracks are made of reinforced steel and rubber matting. All four tracks were stolen from the vehicle. Those with information are asked to contact Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Copper wire stolen

On Jan. 4, police received another report about the theft of copper wire from a B.C. Hydro substation on Squamish Valley Road, the latest in a string of such thefts. This time, about 30 pounds of wire valued at approximately $500 was stolen, Pride said.

Items stolen from vehicles

Also last Wednesday, police were told that a Hilti Gun nail gun used in construction was stolen from a vehicle that was parked in the driveway of a home in the 41000 block of Rod Road in Brackendale. The vehicle was not locked at the time, police said. The nail gun is valued at around $2,700. Other items of high value that were left in the vehicle were untouched in the theft, which may have occurred the previous evening, Pride said.

Also on Wednesday, numerous CDs and a power drill were stolen from a vehicle that was left unlocked while parked at a business in the 1500 block of Highway 99.

Woman arrested for assault

On Friday (Jan. 6) at around 1:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a dispute at a home in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe. A 24-year-old Squamish woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting a male at the scene. Police say a verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation when the male attempted to leave. The man sustained minor injuries.
