BC Hydro 'transformer issue' knocks out power for thousands in Squamish Friday night

BC Hydro says power was out for 3,563 customers for a time. It was fully restored  by about 1 a.m. Sept. 23.

Squamish Fire Rescue was called out to a fire near the oceanfront on Friday night (Sept. 22).

Power was out for thousands of residents in Squamish after a fire at the end of Loggers Lane on Friday night. 

At about 8 p.m., flames and smoke could be seen near the oceanfront property. 

BC Hydro described the location as West of Highway 99, south of Queens Way, North of Spakwus Ldg.

Soon after, power was out downtown and into Dentville and the Business Park.

BCHydro says power was out for 3,563 customers for a time. It was fully restored  by about 1 a.m. Sept. 23.

The District of Squamish tells The Squamish Chief that no injuries were reported from this incident. 

The fire was a result of a BC Hydro transformer issue, according to Christina Moore, spokesperson for the District. 

"Squamish Fire Rescue crews quickly extinguished the fire once the system was de-energized by BC Hydro crews," she said in an email on Saturday morning.
