Squamish-area residents and visitors are invited to take part in B.C. Rivers Day celebrations this Sunday (Sept. 30) in Squamish and Britannia Beach.
First established in 1980, B.C. Rivers Day is a province-wide event, held every year on the last Sunday in September. It has been proclaimed by communities across B.C. and attracts over 75,000 people to more than 100 events each year. In 2005 World Rivers Day was first declared, spreading the message about the importance of rivers to people and the larger ecosystem.
This Sunday's Squamish celebration, organized by Squamish Streamkeepers and the Squamish River Watershed Society, will take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adventure Centre. Citizens will have a chance to take part in a riparian planting exercise and view juvenile fish trapped in nearby Loggers Lane Creek.
In the Adventure Centre amphitheatre, Doug Swanson will provide presentations on his efforts to capture outmigrating juvenile fish in Howe Sound to gain information about the numbers of salmonids going out to sea.
The Britannia Mine Museum is also hosting a Rivers Day event on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will include exhibits and presentations from a number of local interest groups and biologists, along with tours of the Epcor water treatment plant. Visitors can learn and explore how Britannia's environmental remediation program is improving the water in Britannia Creek and Howe Sound. For more information visit www.britanniaminemuseum.ca
