Wildfire near Woodfibre site downgraded to a 'smouldering ground fire': BC Wildfire Services

Eleven firefighters and one helicopter remain on the scene of the Squamish area’s first confirmed wildfire of the season.

Please note, we have continued to update this fire here.

The Mill Creek wildfire near the Woodfibre site on Howe Sound has been downgraded to a rank one fire, which consists of a smouldering ground fire with no open flame, according to the BC Wildfire service.

The fire was discovered on Tuesday afternoon near the northern boundary of the Woodfibre LNG property.

As of July 21 at 4:30 p.m., the 11 firefighters, one helicopter and one operations manager sent out in the morning Wednesday, still remained working on the fire, said fire information officer Marg Drysdale.

Drysdale said that the fire remains to be about 0.15 hectares in size and is moving toward a powerline, but the crew on-site is working with BC Hydro to have the powerline de-energized.

Rebecca Scott, director of communications for Woodfibre LNG, wrote in an email to The Chief that the company is providing some support but that the BC Wildfire Service has the site under control.

"Woodfibre LNG is deeply grateful to the rapid response and hard work of the BC Wildfire Service's crew in an especially challenging fire season," she said.

Drysdale said the cause of the fire is still undetermined at this time.
