One of B.C.'s most wanted men is in custody today after a Squamish resident recognized him from a Crime Stoppers photo.Just after 1 p.m. on Monday, two RCMP members responded to a citizen's report of a possible sighting of Gregory Joseph Scuby, who was recognized from a photo in Sunday's edition of The Province newspaper.

Crime Stoppers had listed Scuby as wanted for criminal harassment and dangerous driving.

"He's been on the lam for a few years," said RCMP spokesperson, Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Members responded to the McDonald's restaurant on Cleveland Ave. and approached two males, one of whom fit the description, but was using an alias.

While a group of pre-school-aged children looked on, police attempted to arrest the man and a struggle ensued. Scuby resisted arrest and attempted to flee from police.

The struggle continued at the restaurant's entrance where Scuby attempted to take an RCMP member's gun away.

He was unable to secure the weapon, according to Ritchie, and a third RCMP member that had been called in for back up helped subdue the suspect. He was then taken into custody.

The public was at no risk throughout the arrest, said Ritchie.

"It it was just between the police officers and the suspect. There was no danger to any other members of the public."

He added that the children's care worker called the Squamish detachment in the afternoon to commend the police officers.

Both of the arresting officers and Scuby received scrapes, cuts and abrasions during the arrest.

Scuby is being held in custody on four outstanding warrants from Richmond and Vancouver for charges of dangerous driving, flight from police, criminal harassment and breach of probation.

Squamish RCMP will also be recommending further charges of obstruction, resist arrest and assault police officer be laid when he appears in court in North Vancouver on May 2.

Results of the appearance were not available by press time.
