Bear destroyed in Britannia

Animal killed after it stalked people, tried to enter homes

Conservation officers recently destroyed a bear that "showed aggressive/predatory behaviour" toward humans in Britannia Beach.

The bear was stalking people and trying to break into homes, Sgt. Peter Busink of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service wrote in an email to The Chief on Tuesday (Nov. 16). The decision to destroy the animal was made during the first week of November after it showed no fear of human and was deemed a "high risk to public safety," Busink wrote.

Over the past week another bear was given a short-distance relocation and an orphaned bear cub found in Brackendale was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, Busink said. As well, a deer that was injured in a collision with a vehicle was put down, he said.

Meanwhile, during the past week four local business owners were issued Dangerous Wildlife Protection Orders, which require that the owners clean up garbage or other attractants or face a fine. As well, one person was charged with feeding dangerous wildlife, one with having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and one for having open liquor inside a vehicle.

Also, two people were charged with catching and retaining more than their daily limit of fish. A total of 17 fish were seized, Busink said.
