Bear incident near Squamish golf course, residents advised to avoid area

A bear charged a cyclist near the Mamquam River and Squamish Valley Golf Club. District and COS ask residents to avoid the area if possible.

The District of Squamish has sent out a wildlife warning, stemming from an incident that took place near the Mamquam River and the Squamish Valley Golf Club.

“The Conservation Officer Service [COS] and District of Squamish are issuing a warning following a bear encounter between a sow with a cub and a cyclist on the Golf Course Trail (see map). The incident occurred in the afternoon of Thursday, August 17,” reads the alert.

“The sow charged the cyclist and contacted the front tire of their bike causing the cyclist to go over their handlebar. The cyclist is safe and did not require medical attention for their injuries.”

The alert says that the COS has put up signage and asks residents to please avoid the area if possible and to be vigilant in the area otherwise.
