BFI, Squamish Nation strive to address woes face-to-face

The Brackendale Farmer's Institute (BFI) has re-doubled their efforts to prevent possible development on the current BFI Park and Fair Grounds land.

The Brackendale Farmer's Institute (BFI) has re-doubled their efforts to prevent possible development on the current BFI Park and Fair Grounds land.

The organization has now launched a poster campaign aimed at raising awareness of how development by the Squamish Nation and their partner MacDonald Development Corporation on the Cheekye Fan could impact the park.

However, according to BFI member Bill Berg, their priority remains directly meeting with representatives of the Squamish Nation.

"I think that would further or cause, that it would be best if we could talk directly," said Berg. "Chief Jacob has indicated that he wants peaceful relations with his neighbours. That would be us."

As of yet a face-to-face meeting has not occurred between the two groups. However, Chief Gibby Jacob said that the Squamish Nation is very open to speaking with the BFI about this issue, although contact has yet to be made.

"To my knowledge, no we haven't been in contact with them yet, and they haven't contacted us," said Jacob. "But it's not like we haven't tried, and we'll keep trying."

Some steps towards a meeting between the two groups have taken place. A meeting between the BFI and local representatives of the Squamish Nation was scheduled for Tuesday (March 27) but was canceled.

"One person who was supposed to be there was not able to make it," said Berg. "It has been tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday next week (April 3)."

Berg said that he has also spoken to Peter Gordon of Cascadia Consulting, which is working with the developers, and the consulting firm has agreed to try and help arrange a meeting.

"As long as one of us is successful in getting a touch with the other, that is all I want," said Berg. "I am really encouraged that Chief Jacob has expressed an interest in meeting with us, that's fantastic."
