Officials investigating vessel towing large barge in Squamish

Transport Canada is investigating a vessel that was spotted towing a large barge full of rocks and fill in the Mamquam Blind Channel earlier this month.
The government regulator launched the investigation after The Chief sent it our photos of the boat towing the barge and asked for a comment on if the vessel was appropriate for the job.
A workboat of not more than 15 gross tonnage is regulated under the Small Vessel Regulations that say no person shall operate a workboat under circumstances that exceed its design limitations, if any, according to Transport Canada.
“The owner and Authorized Representative of a vessel are responsible to operate the vessel in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001) and the applicable regulations,” wrote a Transport Canada spokesperson in an email to The Chief.
“Under the (CSA 2001), the master of a vessel shall take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the vessel.... Transport Canada is following up on this matter.”

"The District coordinates closely on any required response efforts with all relevant marine authorities, including Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Ministry of Environment," said Gary Buxton, general manager of community planning and infrastructure.
"We are aware that Transport Canada is following up, and will be reviewing the situation."
The Chief reached out to the company that owns the towing vessel but has yet to hear back.
This story will be updated if any new information comes to light.
