West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country MP Blair Wilson will host a town hall meeting today (Feb. 1) at the Squamish Library. But the subject matter won't be on the recent questions surrounding his 2006 election campaign. Rather Wilson intends to present opportunities for student summer jobs available through the Canada Summer Jobs 2008 program.
The event, which runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m., was announced just two days earlier on Wednesday (Jan. 30). As the window opens for non-profit groups and small businesses to apply for Canada Summer Jobs funding, Wilson presents the best ways this federal support can be applied to Squamish.
The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create work experiences for students between the ages of 15 and 30.
A successful application can be a significant help, since it covers not-for-profit employers for up to 100 percent of the minimum wage for students. Public-sector and small private-sector employers can receive up to 50 percent of minimum wage for their eligible employees.
The town hall will give potential employers ideas on projects most important to Squamish, such as initiatives leading up to 2010.
