A resident of a 38000 block Cleveland Ave. residential and commercial building called Squamish RCMP at 7:30 a.m. Monday (April 24) to report a box full of suspected dynamite was found in a hallway. A Vancouver RCMP explosives unit attended the call and disposed of what was discovered to be blasting caps. No explosives were found. An investigation continues but since all blasting caps are identical, it is difficult for police to prove where the caps came from, said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Suspected arson investigated

A series of fires Monday afternoon (April 24) are leading RCMP and Fire Rescue to suspect arson. At approximately 1 p.m., three small brush fires were attended to on Mamquam Road east of Highway 99. Approximately 10 minutes later, two more brush fires were reported on Queens Way near Pioneer Way. In both cases, the fires were spaced out enough that it was unlikely sparks jumped from one bush to another, and the area was too wet to have been an accidental cause, such as a discarded cigarette, according to firefighter Bob Fulton. Residents are nonetheless reminded that dryer weather makes smoking materials discarded from vehicles extremely hazardous. Incidents such as these may be a tactic to occupy RCMP while another crime occurs, said Ritchie, so police were on high alert for robberies in progress. None were reported.

Copper stolen

A utility trailer at Watch Point gravel pit south of Murrin Park was broken into Sunday evening (April 23). Three 70-foot rolls of copper were stolen.

Car crash holds up traffic

A two-vehicle accident at Highway 99 and Industrial Way held up traffic for 20 minutes Sunday (April 23). A approximately 1:15 p.m., a 60-year old Vancouver man driving a 2005 Mazda station wagon southbound on Highway 99 ran a red light and collided with a northbound 1993 Jeep turning left onto Industrial Way. The 31-year old female driver was treated at the scene and her three-year old passenger was uninjured. The Mazda driver was charged with running a red light and his female passenger was taken to hospital.

injured on bike trail

Fire Rescue attended a medical call to Alice Lake Provincial Park Sunday (April 23) at approximately 3 p.m. when a seven-year old boy suffered a head injury while biking on a trail between two parking lots. Fire Rescue assisted emergency medical personnel in placing the boy on a stretcher and transporting him to an awaiting ambulance.

Recycle bin

extinguishes its own fire

A high tech garbage bin at a recycling depot on Government Road proved to be a good investment for Carney's Recycling when a fire ignited in the compactor Sunday (April 23). The bin's fire extinguishing system successfully doused the flames before Fire Rescue arrived.
