Blaze battled at Britannia Beach

Small wildfire sparked near railway tracks

A wildfire ignited just north of Britannia Beach Wednesday (Aug. 18), sending fire crews scrambling.

The fire was reported to the Coastal Fire Centre at 11 a.m. Wednesday. By 11:15 a.m., two fire trucks from Britannia Beach's fire hall, an initial attack crew and a helicopter carrying a water bucket were on the scene.

The incident was "fairly minor," according to the centre's information officer Eric Meagher

By 1:30 p.m., the fire was 90 per cent contained, said Meagher. And by 3 p.m. it was 100 per cent contained and 90 per cent extinguished.

"By Wednesday evening [Aug. 18] it was pretty much out and it's currently in patrol," said Meagher on Thursday afternoon.

The fire began along a CN Rail track west of Highway 99.

It didn't impede or change Highway 99 traffic, but Coastal Fire Centre personnel put a call out to CN requesting trains slow down when approaching that stretch of track, said Meagher.

He didn't have an exact size of the area scorched, but described it as very small.

The cause is still undetermined.
