A promotional item that had been placed inside an appliance by a manufacturer forced police to shut down the Squamish Home Depot for a few hours this week out of fear that it might be a bomb.
Squamish RCMP asked customers to vacate the store late Tuesday (June 26) while a police explosives disposal unit was brought in to investigate the mysterious item, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in an email to The Chief. The item was discovered in the late afternoon and the store was shut down into the evening.
He did not say what the item looked like.
"The item was a promotional/advertisement display contained in an appliance that employees were not aware of," he wrote. "The store was shut down until our explosives unit attended as our officers could not make the evaluation upon their attendance.
"It was good to see in the end it was, in fact, nothing of concern."
