A 35-year-old Squamish man is under investigation for possible involvement in a break, enter and theft that occurred last week at a home on Kintyre Drive.
Last Thursday (Oct. 11) at around 1:30 p.m., police received a report of a break-in at a residence in the 40000 block of Kintyre, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement. A resident had returned home when the suspect was still inside and heard a noise but thought it might be an animal, Pride wrote.
The resident didn't realize someone had been inside until after the suspect fled, and didn't phone police until 15 or 20 minutes later, he said. A back sliding door had been used to gain entry, and a bag of miscellaneous jewelry, change and personal items was stolen. A neighbour found the bag containing the missing items a short distance away, Pride said.
After a witness provided a description of a possible suspect leaving the scene on a grey Kona mountain bike, police located a 35-year-old man described as "very well known to them" in the area. Forensics experts are examining related items for fingerprints and "the noted suspect may be charged with the crime," Pride said.
"Police want to emphasize that peopleshould call them immediately for any such suspicious events, and not to investigatethemselves," he wrote. "Better [to have] the policeattend, than a homeowner find themselves in an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situation."
Man faces charges
A 39-year-old Squamish man faces charges of assault and breach of court-ordered conditions as a result of an incident that occurred last Wednesday (Oct. 10). At 3:34 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman being assaulted by her boyfriend in the 30900 block of Government Road. Officers located the suspect, who was arrested. The man had a prior assault charge against the woman and is facing a charge of breach of conditions in connection with the latest incident.
Mom, baby injured
On Friday (Oct. 12) at around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a man having assaulted his ex-girlfriend in the 39000 block of Government Road. A Squamish man was arrested nearby and faces a charge of assault. A seven-month-old child was present during the argument, which turned physical. The infant suffered a bruise on his forehead. The mother and child were treated for their injuries at Squamish General Hospital.
Phone stolen, retrieved
Last Tuesday (Oct. 9), police responded to a report of a car having been broken into while parked in a church parking lot on Diamond Road. Between 12:15 and 1:15 p.m., the driver's-side window was smashed and an iPhone 4 was stolen.
The device had an application that allowed police to ascertain a general location of the stolen item, Pride said. Based on familiarity with those who were known to them who lived in the area, they were able to retrieve the device and return it to its owner. Police spoke to a 22-year-old Squamish woman about the matter, but charges are not being pursued, he said.
Bike taken
On Thursday (Oct. 11), police received a report of a mountain bike having been stolen from a home in the 41000 block of Tantalus Road. The theft is thought to have occurred between Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 6 p.m., possibly after the bike was left unlocked. The bike is a green, 18-speed Kona Stinky with an after-market Boxxer front fork and SRAM 7 components, valued at $2,500.
Laptop swiped
On Saturday (Oct. 13) between 3:30 and 4 p.m., a piece of luggage containing a suit and a Toshiba laptop computer valued at $600 were stolen from a vehicle that was left unlocked in the Royal Bank parking lot in downtown Squamish.
Items taken from home
On Saturday, police received a report of a break and enter in the 40000 block of Plateau Drive in Valleycliffe. The incident occurred between Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. No obvious signs of forced entry were noticed at the home. Stolen were Canon camera valued at $500, an $800 Toshiba laptop computer, a $2,500 iMac computer and a wooden box containing jewelry. Police are investigating.
