Breakfast Program help sought

Volunteer-run initiative aims to ensure that kids start their day right

Every Wednesday morning, like clockwork, the same adorable little faces find their way to the Breakfast Program table at Stawamus Elementary.

"What'll it be today?" I ask, as each child declares his or her choice of cereal. I serve it to them with or without hemp hearts and milk. Next, we gather around the table, the kids munching away as we discuss important world issues like pets, our favourite colours, and so on.

Just before the bell rings, I cut up some oranges and hand out apples to the kids who want a snack to bring to class. This is when a few stragglers come though the door, usually a couple of older boys with hallow legs looking for a mountain of Shreddies surrounded by a moat of milk to bring to class with them.

It has been a delight getting to know each of these children in the brief moments we share before they head to class, and a simple avenue through which I can give back to our beloved Sea to Sky community.

Last year alone, 7,870 breakfasts were served to children throughout participating Squamish elementary schools -children who, for one reason or another, wouldn't have had enough food for optimal learning otherwise.

This fall, the Breakfast Program is seeking volunteers to donate 45 minutes per week. If you are interested in being a part of the program, please contact Dr. Lori Broker's office, Squamish Family Chiropractic, at (604) 815-0031 or email [email protected].
