This Saturday (April 13), Brennan Park Recreation Centre is opening everything up for free: swimming, skating and sports.
It's all a part of a municipal event celebrating sport and recreation. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., sport and recreation groups will have information booths at the centre. There will be sport demonstrations and face painting and games.
Recreation is a big part of the lifestyle in Squamish, Tim Hoskin, said in a statement. Residents devote many hours to ensure the success of local volunteer sports and recreation events, the District of Squamish's acting general manager of community and business services stated.
This event is about celebrating these groups, and providing an opportunity for the community to learn about the many activity options available, Hoskin said.
Community sport and recreation groups and the district's recreation team play key roles in helping to build a healthy community, district spokesperson Christina Moore said. Physical activities have proven to positively contribute to one's health and wellness by providing numerous physical, social and mental health benefits, she noted.
The day of free admission will let citizens learn more about what's available in Squamish, Moore noted. Attendees will get a chance to participate in hands-on demonstrations with the various community groups, as well as meet some of the program instructors, she stated.
The district recently poured money into several upgrades at the 35-year-old rec centre, including a new indoor playground, signage, furniture, concession and coffee cart.
The next step is a proposal to construct a $1.49 million, 4,250-square-foot fitness gym.
