Britannia Beach fire contained

RCMP reports no one injured in blaze

A blaze in a forest near Britannia Beach has finally been contained after burning through the night and into the morning on Sunday (May 16).

"It was contained [on Sunday] I know that," said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Ministry of Forest and Range fire information officer Alyson Couch confirmed the fire seven kilometres away from the town of Britannia Beach has been contained by ministry firefighters on Sunday.

"Our crews were able to respond quickly to it and have the fire contained at less than three hectares in less than 24 hours," she said.

The fire was first reported around 7 p.m. Saturday (May 15) and fire crews with the aid of two helicopters reportedly worked overnight to contain it.

Couch said 30 crew members are currently on site working to clean up the area.

"They're hoping to have the fire completely mopped up within the next couple of days."

The ministry confirmed crews would monitor the area after the clean up to ensure no further fire flare-ups.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is still under way but the ministry suspects the fire was caused by humans since there was no lightning activity that evening, according to Couch.

No injuries have been reported and homes on the mountain slope of Britannia Beach were not evacuated.
