The recently transformed Britannia Mine Museum this week was named the winner of the Canadian Museum Association's (CMA) award for Outstanding Achievement in Facility Development and Design.

The award, handed out at the CMA's national conference on Wednesday (April 13) in London, Ont., recognizes the museum for "excellence in function, vision, innovation and architecture," museum officials said in a statement.

The museum, which recently underwent a $14.7-million redevelopment, re-opened to visitors last September with upgraded displays, new, family-friendly attractions and revamped and enhanced education programs.

"This project has been the highlight of the century for us and it has been a remarkable journey for everyone on the team," said Kirstin Clausen, executive director of the Britannia Mine Museum. "To be unanimously recognized and acknowledged by the Canadian museum sector gives us great pride and is a true testament of the hard work and dedication put forth by everyone involved."
