Publisher Laila Michell is pleased to announce the hiring of David Burke as editor The Chief.

Burke, who has lived in Brackendale for the past eight years while serving as editor of the Whistler Question, has won a host of national awards for his writing, including three consecutive years in which his work received first-place recognition from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA).

During his almost nine years working in Whistler, The Question was seven times judged the best all-around newspaper in its circulation category in Canada.

A 1981 graduate of Seattle University's journalism program, Burke has spent 30 years in the newspaper business, including sportswriting stints at The Herald (Everett, Wash.) and the Valley Daily News (Kent, Wash.), and five years as a sports copy editor at The Seattle Times.

In 1995 he married a Canadian and moved to Canmore, Alta., where he served as a reporter and editor at the Canmore Leader for six and a half years.

"In Canmore I became accustomed to people approaching me in the community to offer news tips or just to chat about what's going on around town," Burke said. "After doing the commute to Whistler for the past eight-plus years, I look forward to again being part of the community that the newspaper I work for serves, to chatting with people around town and to learning more about what makes Squamish tick."

The Burke family includes Dave's spouse Carla and daughters Linnea, 10, and Jenna, 7.

Burke replaces Sylvie Paillard, who has been with The Chief for six years, including three and a half years as editor. Paillard recently was named managing editor of the daily Prince George Citizen.
