The natural world is the theme but anything goes at the second annual documentary film festival to be presented March 4 and 5 at the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG).

"It can be something in your neighbourhood, something environmental, kayaking, eagles - anything," said co-organizer Thor Froslev. "The only criteria is that they are no longer than 20 minutes."

The festival is designed to explore the wonder and diversity of the natural world. Froslev, who hopes to build on the success of the first competition held last year, said he has a particular appreciation for documentary films because they have meaning."They have something to say," he said. "There is a message."

The deadline for submissions is March 1 and all of the films entered will be presented during evenings of the first weekend in March.

Co-organizer Coun. Patricia Heintzman said the goal of the festival is to build up a following, making the competition bigger and bigger, every year.

"The idea is to have the BAG host a documentary film festival around the time of the Olympics," she said.

Heintzman would like to see a wide range of entries into the festival from professionals to students at Howe Sound Secondary. She too is very open to what type of documentaries would be eligible.

"It can be loosely associated, but [the films] need to be inspired by the natural world," she said. "The art gallery is the centre of the eagle festival and the building is inspired by the natural world and so should the films."
