The fundraising for Sea to Sky Community Services (SSCS) downtown community hub passed a significant milestone this week.
Carney's Waste Systems and Miller Capilano Maintenance Corp. each donated $75,000 to the projected $8.2 million project, putting the Centrepoint capital campaign over the $1 million mark - a third of the way to reaching its $3 million target.
"Like us, these companies are passionate about the corridor, here for the long term and working hard to develop and support the Corridor," Lois Wynne, SSCS executive director, wrote in a statement released today (Oct. 3). "We're so grateful for today's generous donations, which will help to ensure a better future for thousands of people from Britannia Beach to D'Arcy."
Centrepoint is a planned new building at Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street in downtown Squamish. A partnership between Sea to Sky Community Services and Squamish United Church, the building would contain community rooms, a preschool, programming rooms, a floor of affordable housing and office spaces.
"Supporting this project was an easy decision for us," said Steve Drummond at Capilano Highway Services. "This project is a great 'legacy' project, bringing benefits for many decades to come. We've been building the Corridor for decades, literally, and with this project are building community strengths; it's a great fit for us."
"I'm pleased to be helping to create something that will strengthen an organization, safeguarding its ability to look after people," said Owen Carney of Carney's Waste Systems. "You never know when you or a family member will need help. But at least you'll know Sea to Sky Community Services will be there when you do."
The campaign has previously received donations from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, Squamish Savings and the District of Squamish.
