Cap U closes as faculty goes on strike

Issues include job security and academic freedom, association says

Faculty at Squamish’s campus of Capilano University are behind picket lines.

Pickets went up at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning and classes are cancelled at the university until further notice, according to the university's website.

All Capilano campuses, including Squamish, North Vancouver and Sunshine Coast, are closed due to the job action.

The university sent out email notices to students around 10 p.m. Wednesday night telling them all classes is cancelled until further notice, according to media reports.

The association and university representatives met for mediated talks Tuesday afternoon. 

Late Tuesday, the Capilano University Faculty Association announced its members would be behind picket lines starting Wednesday. 

The association is calling for improved job security, improved regularization, and academic freedom, according to an association newsletter. 

Capilano faculty voted 80 per cent in favour of a strike in early March.

According to the university's website, final exams set to start Monday will go on as scheduled.
