Would-be thieves broke into the Squamish Transit compound on the weekend and attempted to steal money from the cash boxes on two separate buses.
Police are examining surveillance video in their investigation of the incident that was first reported on Sunday (March 3), RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
A suspect or suspects entered the transit compound in the 38000 block of Production Way overnight Saturday (March 2) or Sunday. Two buses were broken into and the buses' cash boxes targeted, he said. In addition to examining surveillance video, police are examining forensic evidence in their efforts to identify a suspect or suspects.
Bicyclist struck
Last Wednesday (Feb. 27) at around 9 a.m., a vehicle struck a bicycle as it was travelling southbound on Buckley Avenue near Howe Sound Secondary School. The cyclist was riding in the bike lane when the southbound vehicle pulled over, striking the bicycle. A 52-year-old Squamish man who was riding the bike was taken to Squamish General Hospital for assessment. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap.
Man arrested
Also last Wednesday, police attended a home in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue in response to a report of an assault having occurred at around 5 p.m. A 26-year-old Squamish man was arrested nearby, allegedly for having assaulted his 28-year-old girlfriend at the home.
Suspect nabbed
Last Wednesday at around 11 p.m., police responded to a break-and-enter in progress at a business in the 1100 block of Enterprise Way. A man had been seen digging a hole under a fence in an attempt to enter the business's compound. At the scene, a 32-year-old Squamish man described as "a very well known criminal involved and property and drug offences" was arrested after having tried to flee by bicycle. A small amount of marijuana was found in his possession after the arrest. He faces charges of break, enter and theft and drug possession charges.
Window damaged
On Sunday (March 3) at around 3:15 a.m., Squamish RCMP responded to a report of an alarm at Capilano University on Carson Place. At the scene, police noticed that metal covers securing a window at the back of the building had been pried open. No entry was gained, and nothing was stolen.
Machines damaged
Also on Sunday, police received a report of three coin machines at a business in the 1100 block of Industrial Way having been damaged overnight. Damage to the machines was extensive but no money was stolen. Police are examining surveillance video as part of their investigation.
Truck damaged
On Sunday, police received a report of a vehicle having been damaged overnight while parked in a garage in the 1000 block of Industrial Way. The 2007 Ford Ranger had its rear window smashed, but nothing was stolen.
Computers stolen
On Monday (March 4) at around 12:30 a.m., police responded to an alarm at the Reconnect Alternate Program School in the 38000 block of Buckley Avenue. An office door had been pried open, Pride said. Two computers and keyboards were taken, but were later located by police in a wooded area behind the school. Police are examining the items for fingerprints.
