Celebrating excellence at Don Ross Secondary

Students recognized for their efforts

The Don Ross Secondary Awards Night was one to remember for students, staff and parents. The event drew up to 300 people on Monday night (June 8) as students were honoured for their scholastic, sporting, arts and humanitarian achievements.

"It is a huge night for our kids because of achievement. They have achieved great success either in arts, athletics, and academics or service in our schools. It is a celebration for all the work done," said Christine Perkins, Don Ross principal.

The night kicked off with the musical styling's of the Don Ross Secondary choir and culminated with major awards such as the River Church Humanitarian Award given to Conner Haberl, the Jim Blackman Memorial award to Clinton Shard, the Margaret Marchant Award to Oliver Blow and the Great Trek Award to Nick Bruce.

"All of the awards are great for the people who get them but of course we have our signature awards at the end, which are always very exciting," Perkins said.

For Rick Smith Math Award winner Alex Toews, the awards event is something to look forward to and work towards throughout the school year. Toews also won the award for top student in Francais Langue et Literature and Outdoor Leadership.

"It's great to have recognition for hard work. I wasn't actually invited tonight but they mixed up the invitations. I came anyway because I had a bit of a hunch," Toews said.
