Centrepoint on its way

Development permit authorized by council
Centrepoint

Shovels may soon be in the ground on Centrepoint, the $8 million downtown community services hub.
The development permit for the facility, slated for the corner of Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street, was authorized at the Nov. 18 regular council meeting — the outgoing council’s last before the new council’s swearing in on Dec. 2. Mayor Rob Kirkham called the project exciting.
The facility will include 32 units of affordable housing, community rooms, a preschool, programming rooms and office space, and will consolidate some of Sea to Sky Community Services’ 13 different facilities in the Sea to Sky Corridor.
It will include a sanctuary for the Squamish United Church, which donated the land for the facility. The building will also incorporate some of the original church facade and a bell tower, to represent the church.
“I am stunned a little bit that we are already at the building stage, and I just think that is fantastic, it is a great project,” said Coun. Susan Chapelle.
The project is a partnership between the community services organization and the church. Both organizations held fundraisers in support of the facility. – with files from Rebecca Aldous
