The roof of the Cheakamus Centre longhouse was damaged in a fire Wednesday night.

Squamish Fire Rescue firefighters received the 911 call about the blaze at the longhouse on Paradise Valley Road at about 5:30 p.m. on June 4, according to District of Squamish spokesperson Christina Moore.

Occupants of the 2,300-square-foot building were evacuated, with everyone safe and accounted for.

"Crews extinguished the fire, and the damage was confined to the roof structure of the longhouse," Moore said.

Approximately 20 firefighters and three fire chiefs were on the scene.

A variety of firefighting apparatus were deployed, including three fire engines and additional support equipment.

The cause is under investigation.

It is owned by the North Vancouver School District.

The longhouse, which can accommodate 50 people, is used for teaching programs, particularly with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Elders.
