Squamish's community newspaper was honoured three times this weekend at the 2011 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards, including a first-place prize in one category.
The Chief's editorial page was judged the best in the country in the 3,000 to 3,999 circulation category at the awards gala at the River Rock Hotel and Casino in Richmond on Friday (April 29). The Chief's editorial package finished just ahead of the second-place Gulf Islands (B.C.) Driftwood and the third-place Westlock (Alta.) News.
Chief editor David Burke picked up a second place in the Best National Editorial (circulation up to 9,999) competition for an opinion piece he penned in December.
Of Burke's editorial, titled, "Canada's shame," the judges wrote, "David Burke of the Squamish Chief delivers a powerfully written editorial on Canada's sorry international reputation on the environment. Burke takes a strong stand, uses facts and research well to back up his position, and doesn't pull a single punch in his delivery. A great example of what an editorial should be."
The Chief also picked up third place in the Best Website category (circulation up to 3,999).
