Citizen of the Year nomination deadline extended

Chamber of Commerce prepares to celebrate 76 years

Do you know someone who made an outstanding volunteer contribution to the community in 2009? The Squamish Chamber of Commerce is getting set to recognize these individuals for their achievements.

The Chamber is preparing to celebrate its 76th anniversary Jan. 30, and the organization has just extended its deadline for Citizen of the Year nominations so no potential candidate is missed.

The extended deadline now means the process is in line with the Business of Year nominations - entries for each will be accepted by e-mail at [email protected] or by staff at the Adventure Centre's Visitor Information Centre until 4 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 13).

The citizen nominations so far appear to favour a few outstanding individuals in a significant way, according to Chamber manager Kenny Music.

"Instead a lot of varied nominations, we're getting a lot of nominations for a very select group of people," he said, adding with a laugh, "There's a lot of popularity already."

Chamber members will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite Citizen of the Year nominee online beginning Jan. 14, and the Chamber board will decide which Business of the Year nominee will take the prize.

The winners will be announced during the Chamber's 76th anniversary gala at the Howe Sound Brew Pub Saturday, Jan. 30.

In keeping with the '70s theme, this year's gala will be "a groovin' affair."

"It will be a far out, boogyin' time!" states the gala invitation.

The cost for the evening of entertainment, dinner and live and silent auction is $100 per person.
