Citizen of Year nominations close Monday

Your chance to have a say on who should be named Squamish's Citizen of the Year is now - but only until Monday. The Squamish Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Business Person and Citizen of the Year.

Your chance to have a say on who should be named Squamish's Citizen of the Year is now - but only until Monday.

The Squamish Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Business Person and Citizen of the Year. Every year, the Chamber of Commerce honours hardworking individuals in two categories for their outstanding contribution to our community.

Nomination letters will be received at the Chamber office at the Adventure Centre at 38551 Loggers Lane until Monday (Jan. 8). Nominations may be submitted by e-mail to , dropped off at the Adventure Centre or faxed to 604- 815-4998.

All nomination letters must include an overview highlighting achievements of why you feel the business-person or citizen should be considered for the award.

Ballots listing the nominees will be mailed to Chamber members in January for voting, with the winner to be named at the Squamish Chamber of Commerce's Annual General Meeting and President's Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 20. A businessperson or citizen can be nominated and receive an award more than once.

The 2006 Business Person is a person, or partners, who operate a business located within the area, represented by the Squamish Chamber of Commerce; provides excellent customer service, or promotes the growth and development of our business community.

The Citizen of the Year is a citizen, or group of citizens, who volunteers his/her/their time for the benefit of our community.

The 2005 winner for Citizen of the Year was Brian Marchant. Brian has been a driving force and Champion for the Arts Community in Squamish, involved in a host of events throughout the calendar year, which enhance the culture of our community.The 2005 winner for Business Person of the Year was Don Evans from the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Don has been instrumental in building the Railway Park into a sought after tourist attraction and garnering funds from a variety of sources to support and build this terrific museum.

Recent winners of the Citizen of the Year award include the late Coun. Ray Peters, Coun. Raj Kahlon, Cliff Miller, Ueli Liechti and Bob Brant.
