Two local residents are hosting an information night this week about a prospective Squamish-based independent school they say will help students achieve academic excellence "while empowering them to become active global citizens."
Coast Mountain School (CMS), slated to open in September 2012, has been in the works since last November, founder Geoff Park and founding board member Toran Savjord said in a statement issued on Sunday (June 12).
Citizens are invited to a community interest and information night on Tuesday (June 14) at 7 p.m. at the Quest University library and administration building.
The school, to be located on the Quest campus, will draw on the experience of "some of the most successful educational innovators in B.C." to create "a highly engaging classroom experience that takes full advantage of our rich natural environment, while inculcating in students skills in written and oral communication, quantitative reasoning and analytical thinking"
"Our association with Quest will provide access for our students to lectures by the university's faculty and the benefits of the institution's rich cultural programs."
Park is senior director and founder of the Camp Summit Outdoor Education Centre and director of Camp Summit summer camps. Savjord is vice-president of operations and development and athletic director of Quest University.
