Skies above Squamish have been hazy as smoke from wildfires in the interior creep out to the coast.
Last weekend, Coastal Fire Centre officials warned Sea to Sky Corridor residents that they might see brown skies as weather conditions force smoke to the mainland. Outflow winds moved high-level drift smoke from the large interior wildfires down the Pemberton and Bella Coola valleys into coastal inlets and rivers.
The smoke was anticipated to stick around for at least the entire weekend (Aug. 23-24).
“These conditions may persist for several days,” the centre’s press release stated. “People who are concerned with their health due to air quality should contact their local health authority.”
A 940-hectare fire rages west of Bull Canyon. The centre is also keeping tabs on two forest fires in the Clendinning Provincial Park and three blazes in the Mehatl Creek Provincial Park.
A campfire prohibition remains in place for the majority of the coastal region, except for the coastal "fog zone" which is the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, and Haida Gwaii.
The Coastal Fire Centre relies on the public to report forest fires to 1-(800)-663-5555 or *5555 on cellphones.
