Public comment period for the proposed Woodfibre LNG plant is now open.

The province wants to hear what you think of the proposed Woodfibre liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant.

If approved, the processing and export facility would be located approximately seven kilometres southwest of Squamish on the former Woodfibre pulp mill site. The plant would export approximately 2.1 million metric tonnes per annum of LNG.

The proposed project is subject to a review under B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Act. It is also undergoing a substituted environmental assessment under the Canadian Environment Assessment Act.

The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) is inviting the public to submit comments on the proposal as a part of the environmental assessment. The intent is to ensure residents’ concerns regarding environmental, economic, social, heritage and health, that might result as a part of the project are identified for consideration in the assessment, the province stated in a statement.

Citizens have 30 days starting Thursday (June 12) and ending on July 11 to email, mail or fax their comments to the department. People can submit remarks at www.eao.gov.bc.ca or mail them to Josh Handysides, Project Assessment Manager, Environmental Assessment Office, P.O. Box 9426 Stn Prov Govt, Victoria, B.C., V8W 9V1. Comments can also be faxed to (250) 387-0230.

On Wednesday (June 18), from 5 to 8 p.m. residents can voice their opinions in person at the second of two Woodfibre Natural Gas open houses. Representatives of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office will attend the meeting at Executive Suites Hotel and Resort, 40900 Tantalus Rd.

On Monday (June 16) from 5 to 8 p.m., Woodfibre proponents are hosting the first in a series of open houses. The backers are also setting up RSVP meetings with groups on June 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. and on June 18, at Executive Suites, Woodfibre LNG spokesperson Marian Ngo said in a statement. Anyone interested in joining the small group discussion can email [email protected] or by calling 1-888-801-7929.
