Cooking up change

Library fundraiser aims to upgrade facility

This month, you can get Squamish Coun. Susan Chapelle working for you - directly for you.

The self-proclaimed "foodie" is offering up her cooking skills to the highest bidder. She'll come to your house, cook a three-course meal for eight and clean up afterward.

"I love cooking for large groups," Chapelle said.

To top the night off, Scotties Liquor Store will provide wine pairings for the extravaganza.

Money raised from the evening will go toward the Squamish Public Library. The library's board is fundraising to improve the facility's space, particularly the children's area, said Tara Franz, the board's chair.

"The children's programs definitely are taking off," she noted.

Last year, the children's story time program's attendance increased by 12.8 per cent, with the Books for Babies initiative jumping 19 per cent, according to the District of Squamish's 2011 Annual Report.

But it's not just the kiddie stuff that is experiencing high participation rates, Franz said. Adult and youth reading clubs are also thriving, with growing wait lists, the report noted.

On average in 2011, 48 people visited the library for each hour it was open and during the same time, 73 items were borrowed. Approximately 123,700 people visited the library's website.

The District of Squamish provides the library with its annual budget. The bulk of that money goes toward running ongoing operations, with little cash left over for items such as new furniture, Franz said.

"All of our municipal money is spent on keeping the library open," she said.

To bid on the evening dinner visit squamish.bclibrary.ca. Vegetarian and special diet menu options are available, Chapelle added.
