A Brackendale resident has been charged with break and enter, firearms-related offences and fraud after trying to fool police that a robbery had taken place.
The resident first reported that $20,000 worth of precious metals and coins were allegedly stolen on June 20, Squamish RCMP said.
Officers recovered some of the coins during a traffic stop on June 22.
Multiple search warrants followed and resulted in the recovery of more of the stolen property, including a number of firearms and prohibited devices, according to RCMP.
Officers executed search warrants on the property that had apparently been robbed, locating some of items reported as stolen, police said.
“Seasoned police officers felt this was an ‘inside job’ and interviewed all residents,” the RCMP said in a news release.
The investigation revealed the homeowner allegedly set up the break and enter in order to make an insurance claim, which would have yielded over $35,000, according to RCMP.
The matter is before the courts. Police did not release the name of the suspect.
