Oil and Gas Comes to council
The BC Oil and Gas Commission presented to Squamish council Tuesday afternoon at the committee of the whole on its role in the regulation of oil and gas business, including the proposed Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC projects slated for Squamish.
The commission is a permitting and compliance authority of the Crown. It does not authorize projects, according to the delegation.
Since 2014, the corporation’s regulation responsibility for liquefied natural gas facilities ranges from design to construction and operation of the facility. In terms of transmission of oil and gas, it is responsible for the transmission in the pipes, once onto ships, other regulatory bodies take over regulation.
The proponents of projects proposed for Squamish have not yet submitted permit applications, according to the commission, which aims to balance environmental, economic and social considerations including First Nations.
