Squamish council gave the nod to amendments made to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District's Regional Growth Strategy, following revisions made to the document.

The Regional Growth Strategy, or RGS, is a high-level document used by the SLRD to outline where development should occur in the regional district.

It undergoes a periodic review every few years for updates, and as part of the process, the document gets referred to member municipalities which can then approve it or ask for changes.

In June, council saw the proposed RGS amendments and asked for changes to be made to the settlement planning urban areas mapping update.

There were two changes that council asked for, according to a staff report.

One involved removing a 10-hectare area west of downtown adjacent to the Squamish River Estuary from the settlement area.

The second was to expand the settlement area east of Brackendale to include an additional six hectares.

Both requested changes were granted, prompting Squamish council to vote unanimously on Sept. 10 to approve the amended RGS.

Coun. Armand Hurford was absent from the meeting.
