On Tuesday (Feb. 4), officials passed a handful of municipal funding requests and grants-in-aid.
District of Squamish council started off with $428,000 worth of requests for funding, but took out the axe in an attempt to keep with officials' goal of obtaining a zero per cent municipal tax increase this year.
While the examination of the requests are far from finalized, council is passing some through as the budget process continues, Mayor Rob Kirkham said.
Mamquam River Access Society's request for $15,000 to build a campground on Crown land beside the Mamquam River was denied funding, as was a $6,000 ask from the Howe Sound Minor Ball for new uniforms.
Squamish Search and Rescue (SSAR) request for $70,000 to replace equipment and provide training was slashed to $10,000. Officials agreed the district needs to meet with SSAR and examine future funding sources.
Grand Wall Bouldering Cooperative Association's request to cover $1,000 worth of new climbing holds was also axed, as was the Squamish SPCA's $4,000 plea for a feline spay and neuter program. Council previously agreed to support the animal shelter's ongoing operations to the tune of $14,000.
