Council for the District of Squamish considered one item from the recently submitted staff budget requests during a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday (Feb. 28).
While staff recommended a $100,000 renovation of council chambers to accommodate growing needs, council turned down the request as unaffordable.
"The clear message was that given the fact that we have a challenging budget and a bit of a challenging time with Woodfibre and everything this year, spending $100,000 to renovate council chambers was probably not the best use of money," said Mayor Ian Sutherland.
Council has until the end of April to turn in a balanced budget, which should amount to $29 million.
