Councillors paid $128,000 in 2004

An independent auditor has reviewed the municipality's financial statements from 2004 and declared the books to be in order.

Part of the annual financial reporting is an accounting of Council remuneration and expenses claimed by the members of Council. Local lawmakers were paid a total of $128,881.50 in 2004 with Mayor Ian Sutherland getting $33,216.78 while the councillors received $15,944.12 each.

Sutherland was reimbursed $2,482.21 in expenses. Coun. Sonja Lebans had $2,086.22 in expenses last year while Coun. Corinne Lonsdale claimed $2,086.22. The other members of council claimed $1,000 or less. Coun. Jeff Dawson did not submit any expenses for reimbursement last year.

North Yards project gets permit

The developers of a proposed duplex development at 39760 Government Rd. now have a development permit.Council granted the DP along with variances allowing the developers to build uncovered patios into the side yard and rear lot line setbacks.

Planner Sabine FooFat said the developers plan to build 18 duplexes with a total of 36 units. She noted the zoning on the property allows for a much denser project.

Lease approved for Brennan Pro Shop

Florentina Weiss, the owner of the Brennan Park Pro Shop, is going to carry on business at the ice arena, at least until Aug. 31, 2006.

Members of Council voted to approve a lease extension for her shop. Recreation supervisor Janet Gugins said recreation centre staff recommended the one-year term because changes are possible at the recreation centre and in the district in the future.

CWY needs more host families

Lisa Harcus of Canada World Youth (CWY) addressed Council asking them to help inform the community of her group's need for more housing for 20 young people who will be staying in Squamish for three months.The young people between the ages of 17 and 20 will arrive June 25. Ten are coming from various places across Canada and the other ten are from Uruguay.

Harcus said almost anyone can open their home for the visitors. She noted senior citizens, families, singles or even new Canadians might like to act as hosts to a Canadian and their counter part from Uruguay.

Hosts must be available to eat dinner with their guests and spend time with them on weekends while they are in Squamish.

Those who take in a pair of participants get a weekly stipend of $140 to cover food costs.
