Downtown Squamish won't be hosting its annual birthday party for Canada this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 21, the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association announced the Canada Day 2020 celebrations won't be on July 1. A parade, festivities and evening entertainment had previously been in the works.

"As the event take considerable planning and financial resources we feel that those funds can be better used to support our members through this difficult time," president Edward Archibald wrote in the announcement.

Celebrations, Archibald wrote, will hopefully be hosted later in the summer to highlight vendors and downtown merchants.

Previously, the 2020 Canada Day fireworks were cancelled in Squamish due to a lack of funding.
