Coyote alert issued in Squamish

'Awareness message' posted after pet dog killed in Garibaldi Highlands

Squamish authorities this week issued an alert to residents after a coyote killed a pet in Garibaldi Highlands.

The message, which District of Squamish officials called a coyote activity public awareness message, was issued on Thursday (Jan. 31) after a coyote killed a pet dog on The Crescent in the Quest University area.

In an effort to mitigate the potential for human-coyote conflict, we would like to remind everyone to be alert and aware at all times, the advisory said. Please keep pets indoors or on a leash. Roaming pets are an easy target for predators such as coyotes, wolves and cougars.

Coyote in Area signs were being posted in the area where the incident occurred, officials said.

To report a wildlife incident, please phone the Conservation Officer Service hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 on your cell phone.
