When Meghan White heard three-year-old Theo Lazaridis was back in the hospital fighting an ongoing battle with leukemia, she did what she knows best got out her scissors.
The owner of The Beehive hair salon is gearing up for one busy cut-a-thon fundraiser. On Sunday, Feb. 17, from noon until 3 p.m., seven hair stylists will man chairs all in support of Theo.
As a mother, White said it was heart crushing to hear the little boy whom doctors deemed in remission last June was back for treatment. Theo was diagnosed in December 2011 with an aggressive form of leukemia.
If I was going through that, it would be nice to have support, White said.
Tickets for the kids-only cut-a-thon are $15. They come with either a hot dog or burger and a drink. To save time, White asks that children arrive with dry, clean hair. Those interested will be able to sign up on the day of the event. On Facebook, 45 people have already indicated they'll be there, White said.
White held a similar event for six-year-old Jasmine Blake, who went to Boston last spring to undergo leading-edge proton treatment for a brain tumour. In three hours, the salon raised $2,000, White said.
This time around, she hopes to raise more money, White said, noting the upcoming event will have more than double the staffing.
Theo and Jasmine are two of three Squamish youth who stood face-to-face with cancer last year. Lina Palethorpe went to Toronto for surgery to remove a cancerous tumour lodged next to her spine.
