A dangerous driver is off the streets after a perilous high speed pursuit involving three police detachments.

At 9:21 p.m. Sunday (April 22), Squamish RCMP received a broadcast from the North Vancouver detachment describing an incident involving an uninsured 1995 Black Nissan 200 SX that had been driven at a police vehicle without headlights, nearly causing a head-on collision.

Three hours later, at 12:23 a.m., the same vehicle was reported driving erratically northbound from Porteau Cove, passing vehicles on double solid lines on Highway 99 and forcing oncoming vehicles off of the road. A marked police vehicle traveling southbound located the suspect vehicle near the Chief parking lot. The suspect vehicle again drove head-on at the police vehicle, forcing the vehicle into the ditch. The suspect vehicle, carrying no licence plates, was pursued northbound on Highway 99 through Squamish, but the pursuit was terminated at Finch Drive when the driver turned the vehicle's lights off and raced into the oncoming lanes of traffic.

The vehicle continued traveling north bound on the highway and another attempt to stop it was made north of Alice Lake. But the driver failed to stop and drove northbound at very high speed without headlights forcing police to again terminate the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was finally intercepted by members of Whistler detachment at 12:55 a.m. when it was followed by an unmarked police unit through several roads in Whistler. The vehicle stopped in front of the Club Ultrawest and a 28-year-old male was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect is being held in custody at the Squamish detachment and will be transported to North Vancouver Court to face charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from a peace officer.
