Date set for Peter Kent’s fiery stunt

Councillor to set himself on fire Feb. 13, if district approves

If all goes according to plan, Peter Kent will be set on fire on Feb. 13 in downtown Squamish.

“With all the media interest in this, it's a perfect way to showcase our town across North America, and hopefully the world. And most of all it's a reward to the voters in Squamish for getting out to rock the vote,” Kent told the Squamish Chief.

As most certainly everyone knows by now, the newly elected Squamish councillor, a professional stuntman, promised to set himself ablaze if the municipal voter turnout was higher than in 2011, 38.6 per cent. On Nov. 15, 47.13 per cent of eligible voters participated in the election, according to the district.

And so it is time for Kent to get fired up, so to speak.

Kent said he is working with the Squamish Business Improvement Association to pull the event together.

“We're putting forward to plan to the district to try and do this, and I say try… for a Valentine’s Eve bash downtown,” Kent said.

Kent said he drafted a presentation and sent it out to Squamish Fire Rescue and Mayor Patricia Heintzman.

He is waiting to hear back what might be required of him to perform the stunt and sorting out all the various permits.

“I want everyone to know and understand those precautions and the fact that no one other than a professional should even consider this. Even the materials that I use are unavailable to the public,” he said, adding that he has performed more than 100 burns over his career and with his stunt school.

Kent is also trying to find some sponsors to help pay for the permit and related costs, he said.
