Diesel leak closes Highway 99 for 2 ½ hours

A northbound commercial tractor-trailer truck leaked an estimated 400 litres of diesel fuel onto Highway 99 five kilometres north of Lions Bay on Wednesday (Feb. 9), forcing officials to close the highway for 2 hours to clean up the mess.

A northbound commercial tractor-trailer truck leaked an estimated 400 litres of diesel fuel onto Highway 99 five kilometres north of Lions Bay on Wednesday (Feb. 9), forcing officials to close the highway for 2 hours to clean up the mess.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement that the Lions Bay Fire Department and Miller Capilano workers managed to contain most of the fuel on the pavement, with "very minimal" amount making its way off the pavement.

The road was closed from 7 to 9:30 a.m., after which the road was open to traffic alternating in each direction, Pollock said. It was fully open later in the morning.

Drunk, disorderly casino patrons ticketed

On Sunday (Feb. 6), Squamish RCMP received a complaint from security personnel at Chances Boardwalk Casino of two intoxicated men acting belligerently and trying to fight staff at the casino. The suspects tried to shove security workers and threw some punches, Pollock said.

When police officers arrived, they found a group of eight to 10 people standing at the casino's front entrance. Officers spoke to the two men who matched the descriptions given by security workers and the two were drunk, uncooperative and resisted arrest, Pollock said. The two were arrested and ticketed for being drunk in a public place.

Radio unit stolen from vehicle

On Monday (Feb. 7), Squamish RCMP received a report of a Sirius satellite radio unit having gone missing from a vehicle in the 40100 block of Kintyre Drive.

The complainant said the vehicle was left unlocked, prompting Pollock to remind citizens that vehicles should be locked and valuables removed when vehicles are left unattended.
