Diesel was spilled onto the road at the intersection of Third and Main Street as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
The spill occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the so-called “stinky pond” right by that intersection.
District of Squamish spokesperson Christina Moore said in an email that a local contractor and a District staffer happened to be nearby at the time, so they responded with a clean-up kit.
“The quick action to clean up the spill has resulted in no environmental impact.” she wrote. “The diesel was prevented from entering the pond.”
“The cleanup is now complete,” she said.
Local residents saw absorbent pads being placed on the stinky pond and observed crews skimming something off the water.
Moore said those items were part of the clean-up kit. She said the material was placed at the outfall of the storm sewer system to prevent any diesel from entering the pond.
A vactor truck was also called in to vacuum and flush the material.
The District also notified the Provincial Emergency Program.
