District hires building inspector

Mathews has 15 years' experience, including stint in Campbell River

After approximately five years, the District of Squamish has filled the position of chief building inspector.

At Tuesday (Nov. 22), the council appointed Richard Mathews as the municipality's building and business licence inspector. For a short time the district had a person in the role, said Cameron Chalmers, but the previous inspector resigned from the position on Oct. 26.

The hole, combined with other vacancies in the department, left the district with no inspection capacity, stated a report to council last month. Finding people to fill the building department's positions has been an ongoing struggle, Mayor Greg Gardner told council at a Nov. 1 meeting.

Mathews comes with 15 years of experience in the industry, including 8 years in Campbell River, Chalmers said.

With this position now filled, the district will be able to offer a different level of support to developers, Chalmers added.

The district is still looking to fill position of acting building inspector in the coming months, he said.

A building inspector reviews building permit applications, issues building, occupancy, demolition and sign permits and generally administers the B.C. Building Code. As a licence inspector, Mathews will be able to issue business licenses.
