District launches Facebook site

Municipality set to unveil redesigned webpage

The District of Squamish has joined the more than 900 million active users on Facebook.

Signing onto the social media platform is part of the municipality's communications plan proposed to council in April. The objective of the Facebook page is to provide people with accurate district information in a timely manner, municipal spokesperson Christie Smith said in a statement. Citizens will be able to obtain data that may impact their day-to-day lives, learn about upcoming events and council decisions, she noted.

Social media services, like Facebook, will help the municipality become a more effective resource, Mayor Rob Kirkham said.

"It will enable us to reinforce who we are and build our reputation as a transparent organization that is responsive to needs of our community," he said.

Postings will be updated regularly, with the potential for two-way dialogues depending on staff resources, Smith said.

The district is set to launch its redesigned website this fall. It will contain easy navigation features and provide opportunities for online feedback.

The district's Facebook page may be reached at www.facebook.com/districtofsquamish.
